The GitHub Externship is a 90 days fellowship program for third/pre-final year students of GitHub Campus Partner schools. The GitHub Externship program is about learning, preparing students to be market ready, strengthening industry academia relations and giving practical experience to students. This also aims to provide innovative solutions to the partner organizations on their existing challenges, organizations could potentially identify real talent that can be employed by the organizations at later stages.

Organization Onboarding
Organizations can signup for GitHub Externship & offer open-source projects to students.

April 22, 2021 - May 21, 2021

Student Applications
Students can register and submit their applications to partner organizations.

First Screening

Mentor-mentee Interaction
All the shortlisted students will interact with their respective project mentors and define the scope of the project.

Student Shortlisting
After the mentor review and student proposal submission, final candidate shortlisting will be done.

Final Selection
Final list of students for the prototyping phase is announced.

FAQs

GitHub Externship by definition is a temporary training programme in a live environment, the GitHub Externship is typically offered to students as part of their curriculum. The reason GitHub decided to call the initiative as GitHub Externship is to provide students from GCP a platform to interact with external partner organizations. The whole initiative is designed in a manner that it shall help students learn the intricacies of real world issues and solve the real industry challenges by their fresh approach and solutions.

It is currently limited to GCP schools because GitHub wanted to give a platform to GitHub partner schools to interact with the industry and solve real world problems, thereby providing GitHub Externship opportunities to students from partner schools. The GCP partner schools since they have been trained on the GitHub platform and open source are in a better position to adapt to the open source environment and shall be able to relate to the challenges in a better manner. GitHub`s commitment is to keep adding more schools to the fore and train students on GitHub platform and open source so that more and more students can participate in forthcoming editions of GitHub Externship.

The minimum stipend committed to each of participating students working on a live project is INR 10,000 per month, since the initiative lasts 3 months, each of the participating students earns approx INR 30,000 during the entire GitHub Externship journey.

The projects that are being offered to students consists a healthy mix of projects ranging from FinTech, EduTech, Saas, mobile applications etc

The whole underline thought process of GitHub Externship is to provide job avenues to the bright developers. Some of the partner organizations have indeed committed to hiring the right set of developers who match the skills required by the partner organizations and they shall be making pre placement offers to the deserving candidates.
